We’re back with another Ask CYOO column! Thank you for all the love on the last column, which is linked below if you haven’t read it yet:
Today I’ll answer the same reader’s second question on how to choose a creative medium. A choice that can feel so fraught with meaning and indecision! I hope you enjoy and as always, please chime in with your advice in the comments.
Two announcements before we dive in:
If you’re free tomorrow 1 PM EST/10 AM PST, I will be teaching a one hour mixed media illustration workshop. It’s free to attend, with any donations going to KAAC. We’ll be drawing Korean food together, and it should be a lowkey playful time! Signups close soon, so make sure to register if you’re interested. Recording will be sent if you can’t make it live.
I won’t be sending a newsletter next week as I’ll be off to Santa Fe for my bachelorette trip! Looking forward to visiting some museums and taking in the beautiful desert landscapes with friends. Will come back armed with updates and photos in two weeks 👋
Dear CYOO,
How did you choose to hone in on illustration as your primary medium? I saw that you've explored multiple mediums of creative outlets in addition to illustration - punch needling, building websites, leading a bookclub, etc.
I ask because from a breadth/generalist perspective, I've been dabbling, as a beginner, on all sorts of crafts (knitting, ceramics, polymer clay, watercolor, gouache, weaving & everything in between) but haven't gone into much depth in any one of these. I would love to become a pro and focus on one, but still can't figure out which craft is worth becoming proficient at.
