I love your thinking behind the pages; I definitely tend to cram too much onto a page as well! Thinking about negative space and having subjects just stand and breathe on their own is a fun contrast!

Yes! I think I feel uncomfortable “wasting” part of a page by not filling it but the negative space is a crucial part of the drawings, isn’t it :)

This is so cool, Carolyn. I’m curious if you draw in the moment you observe, or at a specific time of day? I’d love to do this but finding the time/discipline would be my challenge.

Thanks Lauren! It's a mix of both, which is what keeps it fresh without much pressure. I carry my notebook and pen around so I can draw when I have downtime, but I also take photos of people or memories I want to document to draw that night or the following morning.

Every night before going to bed, I draw a summary of my day. I started on January 1, 2023. I don't put any pressure on the quality of my drawings in these sketchbooks of drawn journal. It's very liberating. Enjoy your stay in Portugal!

Ooh thrilling! London is the best :) See if you might want to get a Pith sketchbook at art stores like Cass Art or London Graphic Centre while you're there, many subscribers have recommended them to me! And Choosing Keeping is the most excellent shop!

I love your week in the journal. I am continuing with my collage illustrated journal although I am trying to introduce more simple drawings on each page. I am looking forward to seeing the result of your journey in the notebook.
